The finest reverb known to man, as good as Westminster Abbey however when using an EMT you can easily vary the decay time from 1 second to 5 seconds, to do this in Westminster Abbey you would have to move one of the walls of the Abbey
New EMT Echo plates are no longer available, EMT used special Steel which was forged in a Steel Mill in Wales, unfortunately the steel mill is no longer in business. You cannot use any old steel, a number people, including us tried to do it when the EMT Echo Patent ran out in the late 1970's, like all the other manufacturers, ours sounded awful.
EMT Echo plates were made in Austria but the steel was sourced in Wales, the EMT Engineers came to the UK to select the steel which was special, if you ever get the chance to see inside the EMT plate box run your fingers over the plate and you will hear a sound, like nothing you have heard before, more like a whisper than anything else
EMT Plates sound better than any other reverb available, even the fabulous Lexicon 224X, Lexicons have a number of great sounds, EMTs have a better sound but just one that can be adjusted from a 1 second decay to 5 seconds.
Around 20 years ago we bought some the equipment which had been installed John Lennon's studio in Ascot, this included 2 stereo EMT solid state 140 Echo Plates, at the time we struggled to get £3000 each for them. We sold one to a guy who had a studio in Pinewood, he had until recently when he put it in a Beatles auction where it made over £20,000
These ones are not as expensive as they do not have the Beatles connection however they did come out of Peter Gabriel's Real Earth studio. As you can see in the pics they are nothing to look at, they just sound great.
Caution : an Echo plate acts like a microphone so they have to be put into a separate room and take care not to stand next to one slagging off the drummer because he will hear you if he is in the control room. Why is it always the drummer ?
2 Mono Valve (Tube) Echo plates @ POA Each. No offers please.
